日本の色んなところに切子がありますが、「薩摩切子」は、紫色にこだわりがあります。
この紫には、歴史があります。従来の色は、マンガンやニッケルを調合して発色されていましたが、28代の斉彬の時代に、金とコバルトを調合することによって紫色を出すことに成功しました。
この調合により、透明感のある鮮やかな紫の「島津紫」の「薩摩切子」は、とても貴重なものになっています。
